Governor Mike Sonko Acts After Nairobi Rains Flood City

Residents of Nairobi on Thursday experienced heavy rains that flooded most city roads rendering them impassable for most of the morning.

Frustrated Nairobians took to social media platforms and other avenues to vent their anger, blaming Governor Mike Sonko for slack in clearing up drainage systems within the city.

Sonko responded to the crisis by commissioning a clean-up crew to clear rubbish carried by the waters that may have blocked drainage passages.

The Governor shared a photo of the crew on his official Facebook page where his followers had an opportunity to see the clearing works going on.

Governor Sonko later released an official statement apologising to Nairobi residents for the inconvenience the floods had caused.

"My dear people of Nairobi, my heart goes out to all of you who have been forced to bear the dire conditions brought about heavy rains pounding in our region.

"It is indeed sad that all over the country the situation is similar and Kenyans have been forced to deal with damage, floods, road snarl-ups and even death," the statement began.

Sonko went on to acknowledge that the main problem in the city was the poor drainage systems and assured residents that he would resolve the problem.

"We all know that the main problem is poor drainage and once we fix this the city residents will not have to bear the brunt as they have continued to do.

"As a start, I have today directed the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company to hasten the process of unlocking the drainage system all over the county.

"Meanwhile my emergency teams are forever ready on a 24-hour standby alert to serve you in case the situation deteriorates," the statement read in part.
