Kenya Will Be a De-Facto One Party Democracy by December - Moses Kuria

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria on Saturday disclosed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Wiper, FORD-Kenya and Amani National Congress (ANC) parties would collapse by the end of the year as the country would at that point adopt a one-party democracy.

Through his social media, the Jubilee MP opined that all the parties in the coalition would join the government to essentially form one party.

"Kenya will be a de-facto one-party democracy by December 2018," he wrote on Facebook.

The term de facto one-party state is used to describe a dominant-party system that, unlike the one-party state, allows (at least nominally) democratic multiparty elections, but the existing practices or balance of political power effectively prevent the opposition from winning the elections.

What this means is the country would have a weakened opposition, a trend that was once seen all over the African continent during the 1960s, and by the early 1970s.

Since Kenya gained its independence on December 12, 1963, it was shaped primarily by the Kenya African National Union (KANU) and the de facto one-party system in place (which became a de jure one-party state in 1982).

Moses Kuria's assessment of Kenya's political scene comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA Leader Raila Odinga held a joint meeting pledging to work together.

Ever since that historic meeting which was marked by a handshake, both Jubilee and NASA politicians have come out expressing their interest in working together.

During a parliamentary session earlier in the week, Majority leader Aden Duale stated that Jubilee was ready to form a coalition government with ODM in readiness for the 2022 general elections.

Similarly, Raila Odinga on Saturday announced that he would revive projects initiated by the Grand Coalition Government that stalled after the end of his stint as Prime Minister.

Speaking at Willy Kaino Kilimo's (Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Treasurer Olga Karani's father) burial in Elgeyo-Marakwet on Saturday,  Odinga stated that he would start with the Iten-Kapsowar Road.
