Wiper Party's Edith Nyenze Wins Kitui West By-Election

Edith Vethi Nyenze, widow to former Member of Parliament (MP) Francis Nyenze has been declared the winner in the Kitui West by-election.

Despite the low voter turn-out, Ms Nyenze carried the day with 14,372 votes which were 72.67% of the total votes cast.

It was a landslide win for Nyenze where her she beat her closest rival with 12,326 votes.

Mr Dennis Muli Mulwa, a young independent candidate was second in the race where he managed a mere 2,046 votes.

Nairobi businessman Robert Mutiso Lelli, who vied on a NARC-Kenya ticket came in at third place with 1,784 votes.

According to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) registers, only 38% of the 52,042 registered voters in the constituency turned up at polling stations to vote.

Ms Nyenze was first floated as her husband's successor by leaders from Ukambani when they attended his burial in December 2017.

She went on to beat her main challenger for the Wiper party ticket, Mr Kitili Maluki, with a whopping 13,388 votes against his 2,663.

The first-time MP promised to finish the projects her husband had started, which includes the completion of primary and secondary schools.

She added that she will focus on uniting the warring people from the Mutonguni and Matinyani divisions of the constituency.
