JKIA Commandant Philip Ndolo Replaced After Miguna Miguna Saga

Kenya Airport Police Unit (KAPU) commandant Phillip Ndolo has been transferred from the command following the Miguna Miguna saga that transpired at JKIA on Monday upon the NRM general's return to the country.

Ndolo, who was summoned to police headquarters, was ordered to hand over to Nyamira County police commander Titus Karuri Ndungu.

According to reports, Ndolo was accused of mishandling the operations at the airport after he allegedly called in General Service Unit personnel to bar Miguna's lawyers and journalists from the facility.

He is also accused of failing to take over the operations properly after realizing there were many lawyers in the baggage hall where Miguna was being held.

"He is being accused of many issues including calling GSU to take over such an operation, harassing of journalists and allowing of unauthorized people to the baggage hall,” an official aware of the operation told the Standard.

Ndungu was then summoned to Nairobi to take over the role immediately.

In his defense, Ndolo is claimed to have told his seniors that the issue of allowing people into the baggage hall was the work of the Kenya Airports Authority and his job was to ensure security.

However, another source divulged that the release of GSU personnel to the airport was not done properly and an investigation has been started.

"That is an international airport. Journalists were doing their job. There was need for a proper organization to ensure limited people were allowed into where Miguna was held,” added another official.

Moreover, the police at the facility are also accused of wrongfully confining Miguna in a toilet whereas the airport has a legal holding cell.

“We also don’t know who made the decision to hold Miguna in a toilet when we have a holding cell. Police have been accused of many violations that were unnecessary,” added another source.
