Police Lob Teargas at Lecturers Outside Education Ministry Offices

Police on Wednesday fired teargas at the lecturers who had gathered outside the Education Ministry offices demanding higher pay.

Reports indicate that the lecturers engaged with the police, however, the situation was quickly contained.

Nobody was badly injured in the afternoon drama as most nursed the effects of the teargas.

The lecturers' strike is currently in its fifth week with the university dons protesting to have a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) effected.

KUSU Secretary General Charles Mukwaya stated that the union would ensure their members stay on strike until their demands are met.

“The strike is going to be escalated, up-scaled and intensified until the government provides counter proposals on the CBA," he conveyed.

He noted that the frequent strikes had contributed greatly to the deterioration of education standards in universities across the country.

“We have not heard from the national government and the university council on progress regarding the collective bargaining agreement. This is not good for our institutions," he added.

Mukwaya advised that the strike would end if Education CS Amina Mohamed engaged in fresh dialogue.

"We are ready and willing to enter fresh talks with the government to end the industrial action which has entered its second month. We will not call it off until the government shows commitment and seriousness in addressing our grievances," he stated.
