Raila Odinga to Hold Private Meeting with SA President Ramaphosa

Opposition leader Raila Odinga will meet South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa, his adviser Jackson Jakakimba confirmed.

Jakakimba did not, however, disclose the agenda of the meeting between Odinga and Ramaphosa only stating that it would be a private meeting of the leaders who are personal friends.

Raila flew to South Africa on Friday where he represented President Uhuru Kenyatta at the burial of the late Winnie Mandela.

The opposition leader paid tribute to the late Winnie Mandela praising her for her struggles and experiences dispassionately.

"She gave South Africa her all, gained much in terms of bringing freedom to her people, and lost so much at a personal level in the process," Raila stated.

"Her place in history is cast in stone here in the land of many heroes and victims and among the human race in general," he added.

President Ramaphosa took over office from the embattled Jacob Zuma and is one of Raila's close allies in Africa.

Odinga’s close relationship with Ramaphosa came to the limelight after the 2007/08 post-election violence when the South African leader was proposed to mediate the Kenyan stalemate.

President Mwai Kibaki and his PNU party rejected Ramaphosa, citing his friendship with Odinga and finally settled on former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan who helped broker a deal that ended Kenya’s political turmoil.

When Ramaphosa was elected as the new leader of South Africa's independence party, the Africa National Congress, Odinga stated the win signalled a new era for democracy in Africa.
