KWS Ranger Who Carried Disabled Girl on His Back to Be Rewarded

The Ministry of Tourism on Wednesday lauded the efforts of Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer Philip Wesa, who carried a disabled girl on his back during a school visit to the Aberdare National Park.

The Ministry stated that it had recommended promotion of the officer as it pursues other avenues of rewarding him sufficiently.

"The Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife applauds Ranger Philip Wesa’s selfless act of fulfilling disabled Deborah Nyaboke’s dream of visiting the Aberdare National Park and viewing the Chania Falls - by carrying her on his back during her school’s tour of the park.

"It is such acts of altruistic sacrifice and great show of humility that give KWS, our disciplined forces and indeed our great Nation, the right image.

"We have strongly recommended to the management of KWS to favourably consider promoting Philip, as we explore other avenues of sufficiently rewarding him for his rare and very humane action, which is quite rare in this day and age," read an official statement.

It further asked all officers to borrow a leaf from Wesa and serve the nation diligently.

"We urge all other KWS and other disciplined officers to emulate Philip’s attitude and actions, in order to improve service delivery to our people.

"Once again, congratulations to Ranger Philip Wesa for reminding us that we all exist to serve others, especially the less fortunate in our society," stated the Ministry.

The ranger got touched after getting word from his colleagues of the girl who could not climb the hill because she is disabled.

Nyaboke, a student from Joyland Special School in Kisumu, had been left behind in the school bus by her schoolmates who went to view the waterfall.

Mr Wesa, upon getting the news, went to the school bus and carried the Form two pupil on his back.

The two ascended the hill with the help of other KWS rangers, all in a noble effort for the girl to get a magnificent view of the waterfall.
