Raila Odinga Defends His Latest Political ‘Handshakes’

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga on Saturday explained that he had to meet Former Presidents Mwai Kibaki, Daniel Moi and other leaders following his handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during the burial of his uncle Oteke Alogo, Raila defended his political handshakes stating that they were a means to ensure Kenya employed meaningful development.

"We've got independent institutions aimed to provide good governance but something is amiss. Something is not working, which is what we want to resolve.

"We are building bridges across; you have seen me recently talking to different Kenyans all over the country in a bid to unite Kenya. I am going to continue to build bridges that will unite the people of Kenya to be one people," he conveyed.

On Friday, Raila visited former president Kibaki and shared a cup of tea at his Muthaiga residence.

"I called on retired President Mwai Kibaki and it was good to see him in very high spirits. We discussed the current state of our nation and exchanged ideas on how best we can forge ahead in unity as a people," Raila stated.

Earlier in April he visited Former President Daniel Moi accompanied by Vihiga Senator George Khaniri and Mvita MP Ahdulsamad Nassir.

Speaking on the visit, ODM Party noted: "The two leaders consulted on the current state of political affairs in the Nation."

The Friday meeting evokes memories of the historic handshake in 2008 that saw a ceasefire on the 2007/2008 Post Election Violence and the formation of the grand coalition government.

Raila's handshake meetings were brought into the fore after he called truce with Uhuru at Harambee House.
