Duale Vows to Sue Kengen Over Floods

Majority Leader Aden Duale on Friday vowed to take legal action against KENGEN for the recent floods experienced in parts of Mandera County.

The legislator lamented the huge destruction caused by the floods and approximated the damage to be around Ksh 5 Billion.

"The flooding has resulted from @KenGenKenya hydro dams releasing excess water downstream causing death and destruction to farms and properties including schools.

"We shall take legal action against Kengen and sue it over 5 billion for damages," he remarked.

Duale was accompanied by Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa and Garissa Governor Ali Korane during a tour of the area to assess damages and the humanitarian crisis.

Around 740 homes were swept away in Mandera and an estimated 4,500 people displaced by the floods.

Area manager of Save the Children’s Dadaab operation, Caleb Odhiambo, could not point out the number of refugee camps destroyed but confirmed that most refugees were forced to move to schools as flood waters rose.

He also cautioned that many residents in the area were at risk of waterborne diseases like cholera.

"This year, children have been hospitalised in Garissa county because of cholera.

"The Tana River has risen by almost one metre from four metres to 4.9 metres, posing a great danger to residents including those in Dadaab sub-county,” he added.
