Raila Odinga Reveals Reason Behind Unity Pact With Uhuru Kenyatta

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga revealed that President Uhuru Kenyatta and himself agreed to come together to change the constitution.

Speaking on Sunday while he presided over a thanksgiving ceremony for ODM politician John Loisa at Enkorika in Kajiado Central constituency Odinga maintained that the push to amend the Constitution is unstoppable.

“We have a Constitution, but it is not working. That is why President Kenyatta and I decided to come together for the sake of changing what needs to be changed,” Odinga stated.

The ODM leader further stated that devolution will only succeed with a change in the Constitution even as he defended the handshake with President Kenyatta, adding they were not under pressure from foreign nations.

Businessman Jimi Wanjigi who accompanied Odinga stated that: “We will not abandon you. We will support the direction you guide us on.”

Kajiado Central MP Memusi Kanchory who also accompanied the ODM leader called for an inclusive steering committee in order to effectively deliver its mandate.

During the thanksgiving ceremony, it also emerged that the steering committee to spearhead a common agenda between Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta will be unveiled next week.

Currently, the team has only two members, ambassador Martin Kimani – representing President Kenyatta – and lawyer Paul Mwangi for Odinga.

The steering committee will have 14 members, with seven from NASA and seven representing the Jubilee party.

In his address during devolution conference in Kakamega, Odinga recommended a three-tier system that retains the counties, creates regional or provincial governments and retains the national government at the top with a clear formula for revenue-sharing.
