Chebukati Exposes How Former IEBC Commissioner Margaret Mwachanya Lied to Kenyans

Embattled IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Thursday hit out at former IEBC commissioner Margaret Mwachanya for lying to Kenyans.

Appearing before the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, Chebukati shamed Mwachanya for citing the outcome of a meeting she did not attend.

"Commissioner Margaret Mwachanya was in Dubai when the plenary meeting took place. I don't know why she resigned, citing the outcome of a meeting she did not attend," stated Chebukati.

The chairman was making reference to the resignation of Mwachanya, Consolata Maina and Paul Kurgat from the poll body.

The three officers cited that Chebukati had failed to give proper leadership and was not steady in his decisions.

"The Commission Chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in difficult times and gives directions when needed," declared the officials.

When asked whether the commissioners were still receiving their salaries, Chebukati stated that National Treasury was yet to respond to his request to halt their pay.

"I wrote to the National Treasury asking that salaries for the three commissioners be stopped because they are not working for us.

"I haven't received any response. So I don't know if they have been paid the April salaries," he responded.

He further downplayed their resignation from the commission stating: "My reading of the constitution is that we should have a minimum of 3 commissioners and a maximum of 9."

The committee also asked him if he felt the public had lost faith in the commission but he expressed confidence that it was still stable.

"I don't have a tool to measure public confidence. All I hear are a few voices out there," he reiterated.
