MPs to Probe Senior Government Officials Over Sh10 Billion NYS Scandal

At least 3 senior government officials are set to be questioned by Members of Parliament over the explosive new Sh10 Billion corruption scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS).

They will appear before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chaired by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi.

Those lined up for interrogation include Public Service Principal Secretary Lilian Mbogo, NYS Director General Richard Ndubai and Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki.

Wandayi affirmed that the officials would be tasked with explaining how the money went missing from public coffers at a time when the country was facing immense challenges.

"This committee has invited the accounting officer responsible for state department of youth, among other individuals at the ministry, and NYS to respond to the queries related to the latest scandal," he stated.

He declared that the time had come for leaders who stole public funds to be held accountable.

"This culture of embezzlement of limited public resources must surely come to an end. People must be held to account in terms of the roles they played that saw the billions disappear," he stated.

The investigation has so far identified 36 companies which are claimed to have supplied NYS with various goods.

DCI officials have been camped at NYS Headquarters along Thika Road where they interviewed staff and collected crucial data.

President Uhuru Kenyatta reportedly summoned Public Service Cabinet Secretary Margaret Kobia to explain the scandal as it dealt a blow to his recent pledges to ramp up anti-corruption efforts.
