Drama in Court as NYS Director Richard Ndubai Refuses to Be Handcuffed

Drama erupted at the High Court on Tuesday after National Youth Service (NYS) Director General Richard Ndubai refused to be handcuffed.

Ndubai, who was among the over 20 suspects arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts, told off a police officer who tried to handcuff him.

The Director-General who is being represented by lawyer Cliff Ombetta was seen signalling his legal team and asking if being handcuffed was in accordance with the law.

Lawyers for the public officials protested a decision by the police to handcuff the male suspects while in court while shouting: "That's intimidation, who has sent you?"

The former NYS DG is among suspects who are facing abuse of office and conspiracy to commit corruption charges and arrived in three Land Rovers and five Subarus.

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji had said he has enough evidence to nail the 54 suspects set over the Sh9 billion NYS scandal.

Haji maintained that his office had sealed all the loopholes that led to the collapse of previous corruption cases in which several individuals accused of stealing billions in taxpayers’ money got acquitted for lack of evidence.

He further noted that the 54 were the first batch of suspects in the second phase of investigations into the plunder of public funds at NYS.

To ensure that the cases are successfully prosecuted, the DPP stated he would appoint four special prosecutors to work with a team from other agencies in efforts to have the looted money returned to the public.

The DPP warned that it would not be business as usual involving tough talk but little action against corruption and that the public would soon see people being jailed for stealing State funds.
