2 Dead After Building Collapses in Huruma [PHOTOS]

Two people were confirmed dead after a five-storey building collapsed in Huruma on Sunday morning.

According to the deputy director National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU), Pius Masai one person was found dead in the debris while another died on the way to the hospital.

The NDMU Deputy Director further stated that three other people were in the hospital.

Masai stated that many of the tenants had vacated the ill-fated building when it developed cracks shortly before midnight on Saturday.

He, however, noted that the number of building’s occupants has not been established.

Tenants in the nearby buildings have been evacuated after rescuers declared the area a dangerous zone.

The NDMU deputy stated that although his team had enough equipment and personnel the entrance to the scene was delaying them.

“Multi-Stakeholders have resolved to safely knock down one side of temporary residential structures in order to create access for rescue," Masai stated.

"National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) appeals to the members of the public to cooperate with the agencies on the ground to allow a smooth operation,” he added.

Masai further noted that illegal power connections were slowing down their search and rescue efforts, sending an appeal to Kenya Power to disconnect power within the area.
