Murang'a MCAs Engage in Fist Fight Over Bribery Claims

Murang'a Members of County Assembly (MCAs) were on Monday embroiled in a fist fight over bribery allegations.

The exchange occurred over allegations that 35 ward reps were bribed Kshs 42,000 each to pass County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) report.

The report which was tabled before the assembly for debate initiated a fiery exchange between the ward reps when the county's finance committee chairperson Mr Kiiru Mbembe rejected it entirely.

He stated that the Finance Minister was not consulted before the report was presented at the assembly.

However, members of the committee refuted Mbembe's statements accusing him of pushing his personal interests in the House.

They disclosed that they had already received the report and discussed it conclusively.

Things took a turn for the worse when Makuyu MCA Stanley Mwangi's claimed that a section of the MCAs had been bribed to facilitate the success of the report.

"We know that some of you have been taken to Mombasa where you were given Kshs. 42,000 to pass the report which has not passed all the legal requirements, " Mwangi claimed.

That is when the aggrieved ward reps demanded he apologize for his 'reckless' comments.

A harsh exchange of words ensued as tempers flared in the House.

The speaker Kairuki Nduati tried to restore calm acknowledging receipt of the report having been proposed by Kamacharia MCA Gerald Wambugu.

MCAs supporting Mbembe heckled Wambugu as he took the floor to table the report after which they went to the floor causing a commotion.

What followed was a fight where members exchanged blows and kicks.

Nduati was forced to adjourn the session to allow for the tension to subside.

"The allegations from the Finance chair in the floor of the assembly is forged are very serious, and I will take my time and investigate the matter. I hereby instruct members of the committee to sit down and deliberate the report and table it in the afternoon," the Speaker declared.
