Matilda Sakwa Appointed as New NYS Director General

Machakos County Commissioner Matilda Sakwa has been appointed to take over from Richard Ndubai as the new Director General at the National Youth Service (NYS).

Matilda is set to take over at the entity that has been on the spotlight over the theft of at least Ksh8 Billion in underhand dealings that saw a number of contractors paid even without supplying anything.

During this year’s Madaraka Day fete, Matilda had reaffirmed her support for the ongoing fight against corruption. She warned civil servants against engaging in activities that may imperil their jobs.

She noted that public officers must be at the forefront in assisting the government in the fight against graft which has become a national eyesore.

Her predecessor had previously packaged himself as a boss who would take corruption head-on but is currently facing charges related to the same vice he promised to fight when picking the job. He accepted the appointment to lead the paramilitary service in January 2016.

After the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved the arrest of top officials at NYS on May 27, 2018, sleuths picked Mr Ndubai from his home and detained him at the Muthaiga Police Station for more than 30 hours.

Two days later, Ndubai appeared in handcuffs at the Milimani Law Courts. It was in an inevitable humbling moment for the boss of the multimillion organization tasked with engaging youth on nation-building.

During retired President Mwai Kibaki’s government, Ndubai served as a Permanent Secretary for Public Sector Reforms and Performance and later offered key consultancy services for the United Nations programs in various states.

Ndubai and other suspects in the NYS saga walked to freedom late last month after facing charges on Ksh468 million theft at the service.

Ndubai and Youth Affairs PS Lillian Omollo sought to be released on bond, a right they were granted after spending several days in the cells.
