MPs Give President Uhuru Kenyatta 3 Days to Fire CS Henry Rotich

A section of Western legislators gave President Uhuru Kenyatta three days to sack Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich over the sugar importation scandal.

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, the Members of Parliament accused the CS of showing a lot of arrogance in responding to their questions on the sugar scam.

Saboti MP Caleb Hamisi and his Kimilili counterpart Didmus Baraza declared that Rotich should be held responsible for issuing two gazette notices that granted the importation of the sugar in question into the country.

"He has never explained the proceeds of Euro bond, he is still showing the same arrogance, he is basically lazy, and we feel that we have a wrong person for a CS," the lawmaker told journalists.

"We are giving the President up to this Friday to sack Rotich, failure to that next week Tuesday we shall table the motion of impeachment," he added.

Hamisi argued that CS Rotich move to issue a gazette notice permitting the importation of sugar saw numerous companies apply to bring the commodity which did not meet standards set by KEBS and jeopardized the lives of Kenyans.

The Saboti legislator's remarks were echoed by Barasa who maintained that they will not relent on their call to send Rotich home.

Barasa revealed about 25 MPs had signed to the petition calling for the impeachment of CS Rotich and are just waiting for President Kenyatta's action before making their move.

"There is no single constituency across the country without cancer-related sickness, we cannot sit and pretend that all is well when the nation is ailing. It is now time for the president to act," the Kimilili MP stated.

The MPs declaration come after Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri admitted while appearing before the joint parliamentary committee on Trade and Agriculture that some businessmen may have misused the gazette notice issued by CS Rotich to import sugar unfit for human consumption.
