Kenya Power and Kenya Railways Issue Notice for Residents to Vacate Reserves

Kenya Power and Kenya Railways have issued a notice to residents living in land belonging to the two parastatals ordering them to vacate by August 1.

The National Building Inspectorate Secretary Moses Nyakiongora wrote to the residents asking them to clear the land.

In his statement, he cited the need for the government to get rid of illegal structures.

He further noted that the decision for the vacation notice was to protect human life and the destruction of property.

“In order to avoid human risks like injuries, loss of life and damage of property associated with Railway operations and high voltage electricity lines, I hereby want to notify you the intended removal of all structures located along Kenya Power and Kenya Railway reserves as from the 1st of August,” he stated.

Nyakiongora also said that the government would proceed to demolish the structures when the deadline lapses.

The areas to be most affected are; Dandora, Makongeni, Mbotela, Mutindwa, Kamae which is around Kenyatta University and Kaloleni. The Nairobi County government had earlier insisted they would get rid of illegal structures.

This comes in the wake of demolitions in Kibera to pave way for the construction of a new road that is seen as a solution to traffic along Lang’ata road.

Over 30,000 residents were forcefully evicted in Kibera despite the likes of Woman Representative Esther Passaris trying to intervene.

Civil rights group Amnesty International asked Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) to be more humane in the demolition as it negatively impacted the residents.
