Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua Tries His Hand at Golf

Over the weekend, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua tried his hand at golf, a sport he claimed to have never played in his life.

A video circulating online showed Governor Mutua, who was officiating the I.C.D.C 8th Annual Machakos Golf Tournament at the Machakos Golf Club, trying to hit the ball using the golf club to no avail.

Even with a trainer directing him on how to approach the ball, the county head's initial strokes were unsuccessful.

Here is the video:

The governor was not shy to admit that it was his first time hitting a golf ball and noted that after a few trials, he was on his way to professional status.

"I have, until today, never hit a golf ball (apart from playing miniature golf with my kids). They welcomed me very well, and properly got me fitted into a T-shirt and a cap and gave me a gift of golf sticks (or is it clubs?). I sincerely thank them for their wonderful gift.

"They then took me to a putting place (is that what it is called?) where on my first attempt, sank the ball – the cheers were real. I was then taken to the main teeing area, where, after some instructions, I was able to hit my first golf ball, properly, also on my first attempt," he added.

Mutua explained that he grew up in the dusty walking paths of Masii, Makina in Kibera and Riruta Satellite, stating that the closest he came to hitting a ball was by foot and it was a home-made polythene-bags ball.

At the end of it all, he confessed that he had a wonderful time stating: "Maybe one day, maybe, I will try it again."

He had been invited by Industrial and Commercials Development Corporation (ICDC) Chairman Senior Counsel Bernard Mung’aata, who is the immediate former Speaker of Machakos County Assembly and the Director of National Election Campaigns for Maendeleo Chap Chap Party.
