Two Overnight Fire Incidents Reported in Nairobi

The Kenya Red Cross Society on Tuesday morning reported two fire incidents that had taken place on Monday night in residential areas.

One of the fires that destroyed some property of unknown value took place in Kibera around the Olympic Primary School.

A second fire also took place in the outskirts of Nairobi in Ruaka estate, Kiambu County, where a number of commercial shops were razed down.

Red Cross relayed that no people were seriously injured in both incidents and firefighters managed to contain the fires.

A series of fires in business districts in Nairobi have come to be seen as a ploy used by private developers attempting to grab land to put up commercial buildings.

"This is a crude tactic used here to evict us, believe it or not in the next few weeks, we will be out of this place and shiny stalls will be erected and leased to new traders and life will go on.

"When the owners of the stalls will want to raise the rent they will engineer another fire, and the circle will go on," explained Michael Gitonga, a trader at Gikomba Market.

Speaking soon after a recent fire at the market, another trader added, "In October, a section of this market just a few metres from here was burnt down, this year it is us, in 2016 too.

"Interestingly all the sections that are burnt down are reconstructed in a week, allocated to other traders who pay more rent.

"We also read a ploy by certain forces to throw us out so that they can rebuild and have new tenants who will pay more than we do," the trader stated.

Other explanations offered after police investigations after such fire incidents include faulty wiring or gas cylinder explosions.
