Nairobi MCAs Nearly Fight Over Corruption

Nairobi Nominated MCA Catherine Opiyo almost came to blows with other MCAs as she disrupted an ongoing press briefing on Tuesday

The incident took place at City Hall where a number of MCAs, who are opposing the current County Assembly Clerk, had called members of the press to announce their stand among other issues.

Morris Gari, MCA Nairobi West, was in the process of addressing the assembled journalists when Ms Opiyo came and grabbed a microphone asking them to leave.

Turning to Gari, she challenged him to take whichever course of action he deemed fit claiming “mutajua hii mwili iko na insurance” (you will know I’m insured) as her colleagues tried to restrain her.

Concerns have been raised about happenings in the County Assembly and the Service Board with a section of opposing MCAs claiming the board is not properly constituted and has been irregularly procuring goods.

The antagonistic MCAs called for swift intervention, citing the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had recommended the prosecution of the Clerk along with the Service Board members implicated.

Members implicated in the allegations include; Ada Onyango, businessman Raphael Maluki, James Kaguma, Philomena Nzuki and Frederick Macharia.

Minority leader Elias Okumu, however, disputed the corruption claims citing all the legal documents were available and that accounting was properly done.

He went on to urge the disgruntled MCAs not to impeach the Clerk based on allegations and to instead give him time to work.
