Governor Mike Sonko Exposes How MCAs Are Looting Ksh357 Million

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday announced that he had nabbed three Ward Representatives who were siphoning public money.

Through a post on his Facebook page, the Nairobi County boss accused the Members of the County Assembly of looting bursary money meant for poor students.

"After disbursing bursaries cheques amounting to Ksh357 million to various schools, it has emerged that some corrupt county officers and around 3 Hon. MCAs are conspiring with cartels to defraud the county," Sonko posted.

He claimed that a private company which is not a school had been receiving and banking county bursary cheques which were drawn in their favour.

"Another company associated with the Makongeni Kaloleni MCA which is not an educational institution has been receiving huge payments from county bursary and development accounts since 2016 to date as evidenced in the attached bank statements," the Nairobi County boss stated.

"It has also been discovered that certain individuals were even beneficiaries of the same county bursaries cheques as evidenced in the attached statements as well," Sonko stated referring to documents he had attached to his statement.

The Nairobi County boss, however, affirmed that he had managed to freeze some of the beneficiaries accounts.

"We have already reported to relevant investigative institutions including the EACC; DCI & The banking fraud," the County boss remarked.

More than 60,000 children drawn from all the 85 wards in Nairobi were set to benefit from the Ksh357.5 million in bursary.

“I want to see strict and transparent steps to ensure these funds are used for the intended purpose. Make no mistake. Anyone who misuses money set aside for ECDE will be arrested and prosecuted,” Sonko warned when the money was being disbursed.

The governor went ahead and cautioned head teachers and other education officials against using such programmes to enrich themselves and urged all schools to open bank accounts and the appointed centre managers must be the mandatory signatories.
