Raila Leaves For Week-Long Germany Tour

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga on Friday flew out of Kenya for a week-long trip to Germany.

The former Prime Minister's team is yet to reveal details of his itinerary but it marks the latest in a number of high-profile international trips since the opposition boss' March 9 handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Raila has met high-ranking leaders and attended various events in the UK, India and South Africa among others in recent months.

It emerged in July that the government issued a communique to all its missions abroad to treat Raila as a senior government representative whenever he visits.

Ambassadors and Heads of Mission were directed to personally receive Raila and his entourage at airports as he is considered the President's Representative.

In sharp contrast to the tumultous pre-handshake days, Raila is accorded diplomatic security and official embassy vehicles to chauffeur him while his expenses are taken care of by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In India, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and reportedly delivered a message from President Kenyatta.

He was also Kenya's official representative at the funeral of Winnie Mandela in South Africa.

Raila met leaders including Deputy President David Mabuza and former President Thabo Mbeki, and was presumed to be Uhuru's official representative despite lacking a title.

Raila last travelled to Germany in 2016.

At one function, he surprised the audience by speaking fluent German for 20 minutes before switching to English.

He explained that he picked up the language during his days as a university student in the European nation.
