Fire at Eastmatt Supermarket, Mfangano Street

On Monday afternoon, fire broke out in a Nairobi CBD supermarket destroying property worth thousands of shillings.

The inferno started around 12:30 PM at Eastmatt Supermarket along Mfangano street.

The county dispatched 3 fire trucks to contain the situation.

Police officers were also present to man the growing crowd milling around the building.

It is yet to be established if they were any casualties in the afternoon ordeal.

Witnesses claim that the fire was a result of an electric fault.

Even though the fire brigade team is to be lauded for the quick response, on Saturday, Nairobians were outraged after the same team showed up to put off a fire at Deep Sea slum without water.

The slum is located next to Muthaiga.

It took hours to contain the fire with residents resulting to using buckets and other containers.

Following the mishap, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris demanded answers from Governor Mike Sonko over the county’s response to the fire.

“I am disappointed that city council fire engines were dispatched to Deep Sea slum with no water in their tanks.

“Governor Mike Sonko, can we have a fire truck in every constituency for rapid response to emergencies? And while we're at it, let's ensure the trucks are well equipped,” a tweet from the woman rep read.
