Aisha Jumwa, Owen Baya Compete for DP Ruto's Attention

Two members of the 12th Parliament are said to be in a heated contest for the attention of Deputy President William Ruto.

The Members of Parliament (MPs) - Aisha Jumwa (Malindi) and Owen Baya (Kilifi North) - have declared an interest in the Kilifi governorship in 2022 and are seeking to receive an endorsement from the DP.

Jumwa has been quoted throwing jabs at Baya soon after the female MP shocked fellow politicians by declaring unwavering support for DP Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.

Owen, who is also an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MP, upped the ante by also throwing his weight behind DP Ruto.

The two legislators have already kicked off open campaigns for the position as was witnessed during a recent fundraiser that was attended by the DP.

"Today, I will not talk what I always talk…we are here to accomplish the dream of my brother’s (Baya) grandfather but I want to tell you that you have a hard task in 2022," Jumwa stated during the event.

The two are said to be competing over development projects as well with each quick to demonstrate how they are better placed to collaborate with the national government.

Jumwa boasts of having secured Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang to attend an education day event where he commissioned the construction of a new girls' secondary school.

As a rebuttal, Baya boasts of having similarly initiated the construction of a boys' secondary school and having bought a bus for another school.

The two have expanded the scope of their campaigns by branching out into other constituencies to promote their bid.
