Names of New KNH Board Members Gazzetted

Health CS Sicily Kariuki appointed three individuals to sit on the board of the embattled Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

In a gazzette notice issued on Friday, Dr Stanley Kamau, Margaret Koech and Dr Nelson Kuria were named as the new board members.

Former Inspector-General of Police David Kimaiyo had been picked in April by President Uhuru Kenyatta to serve as Non-Executive Chairman of the KNH board.

A gazzette notice indicated that Kimaiyo would hold the position from April 18, 2018 to March 17, 2019.

The hospital has faced immense negative publicity this year stemming from a rise in cases of negligence, crippling shortages and, sometimes, outright disorganization.

Most recently, a 68-year old patient Hamza Njoki died at the facility due to a shortage of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds.

The hospital has 31 ICU beds, and regularly ask patients in critical condition to seek treatment elsewhere.

"It is regrettable that the patient passed on 28th August 2018 while we were still waiting to get an ICU bed at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

"The relatives were informed of lack of an available bed in ICU and were requested to seek for treatment in another hospital, which they declined citing lack of money to facilitate transfer of the patient to a private hospital," stated acting Clinical Services Director Dr Peter Masinde.

Masinde reiterated the importance of properly equipping surrounding hospitals so as to ease the burden on KNH.
