The United States of America has announced plans to close its army bases in Kenya and other African countries.
This is part of Pentagon’s defense strategy to focus on threats from China and Russia.
If the decision is implemented, American troops will no longer partner with local forces who help track and hunt down insurgents.
Local security personnel will also lose of some of the more advanced American gear they are given when teaming up with the troops.
The move will be carried out over the next 18 to 36 months but the timeline could be accelerated once the proposal is approved.
The defence strategy to end some of the missions in Africa was unveiled in January.
Gen. Thomas D. Waldhauser, head of the Africa Command, stated local African forces had become increasingly capable in fighting extremists on their own.
According to New York Times, Africa Command will reassign hundreds of soldiers that are currently spread across Africa.
They are also planning to close base in Tunisia, Cameroon, Libya and Niger.
