Details have emerged about how a Chinese man ended up in a viral racist rant describing President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kenyans as "black, poor, monkeys."
The Chinese national identified as Liu Jiaqi has been working in the country for over eight months.
He works at Sonlink (K) Limited, a motorcycle assembling company in Ruiru, Kiambu.
"The company has about 8 Chinese and 12 Kenyans and all the Chinese here are our bosses and we do not know who is the overall boss,” an employee of the company told the Standard.
The employee intimated that the ordeal occurred after a business trip to Machakos County went wrong.
Sonlink limited had sent out a team to Machakos and Matuu towns to look for customers.
"We went for a business trip, looking after our customers. Our official vehicle was busy so that is why we used an Uber," the employee who wished not to be named intimated.
Their uber driver was to complain later that he had misquoted his price citing he never knew they would spend 5 days on the road.
A standoff ensued when the driver asked for asked for Ksh 12,000 on top of his initial fee.
He reported the matter to a police station in Machakos and after negotiations, it was agreed that the Chinese national should pay an extra Ksh 6,000.
The Uber driver drove off and left them stranded at the police station prompting the Chinese national nicknamed ‘Judge’ to become hostile and angry.
On the way back to Nairobi, he kept accusing his Kenyan counterpart of doing nothing to help him.
“He was angry that the Kenyan on the trip was not helpful. When he arrived in the office, he reported the matter to other Chinese managers and asked that the Kenyan is fined.
"He wanted to fine him Sh2000 or give him a warning letter and that is when the matter escalated and he started insulting us saying we look like monkeys and are poor," the source intimated.
Liu has since been arrested and is awaiting deportation.
