Governor Mike Sonko Renames Pumwani Hospital After Himself

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced that the Pumwani Maternity Hospital will now be called the Sonko Pumwani Women's Hospital and College of Nursing and Midwifery.

The governor announced the change via his social media pages outlining that it was the result of a partnership with the Aga Khan University Hospital.

"After having a long day meeting today (Friday) with the Aga Khan University hospital top team on a temporary solution to address the Pumwani Maternity Hospital crisis.

"Whereby it was resolved that Aga Khan will provide additional Doctors, nurses and hospitals support staff for a period of two years at no cost.

"We later got a permanent solution to the said crisis after meeting with a consortium that proposes to construct a 450-bed capacity hospital at Pumwani Hospital and a new hospital at Mutuini with a 250-bed capacity," the post read in part.

The governor further explained that the project would take a period of two years to complete after the groundbreaking ceremony which will be held in November.

"The new 10-storey Sonko Pumwani Maternity Hospital which will stand side by side with the old hospital will compose of a paediatric ICU, an adult ICU, an HDU, staff quarters, laundry and all necessary facilities.

"The new Sonko Pumwani Hospital whose contract will be signed on 25/9/2018 and groundbreaking on 20/11/2018 is scheduled to be opened in the next two years and is expected to ease congestion at the old hospital," Sonko's statement outlined.

Governor Sonko shared photos of himself with the Aga Khan University Hospital stakeholders during the meeting that struck the deal. He also shared building plans for the proposed building.

A majority of the governor's followers expressed disappointment with Sonko accusing him of orchestrating a crisis in a bid to justify his partnership.
