2 Ugandan Military Officers Arrested For Opening Fire on Kenyans

Fear spread in Busia after two Ugandan military officers who had trespassed into the country opened fire on Kenyans who were transporting fish.

The Sunday morning incident happened after the security personnel crossed into the country in pursuit of a pick up that was transporting fish.

On getting to Busia, the officers opened fire on the vehicle, fortunately, the driver escaped the bullets narrowly.

Subsequently, the two were arrested and detained at Busia Police Station where they recorded a statement alongside the driver.

It is illegal for a police officer or a politician from either county to cross to Uganda or Kenya armed with firearms.

Following the incident, a crisis meeting was held between Busia County Commissioner Jacob Narengo and Resident District Commissioner of Busia Uganda Hussein Matanda.

Others who attended the meeting include County CID Commander Esther Seroney and Police Commander Wambua Katithi.

The incident happened one week after two Kenyan MPs Raphael Wanjala of Budalang'i and Gideon Ochanda (Bondo) met their Uganda counterparts in Sigulu Island to discuss how harassment of fishermen on Lake Victoria waters can end.

Ugandan legislator Rebecca Kadaga promised to table a motion last Tuesday for Ugandans MPs to formulate laws that will protect fishermen from Kenya and Uganda against frequent harassment from Uganda's Maritime Officers.

The motion was however postponed and is scheduled to be deliberated next Tuesday.
