A plan to impeach Migori Governor Zachary Okoth Obado has taken a new twist after factions developed among the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
The MCAs had expressed a plan to oust the County boss following his arrest and arraignment in court over the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Belyne Otieno.
However, the impeachment of the embattled Governor hit a snag after a majority of the MCAs took to his defense.
Those who wanted Obado out had cited the criminal charges as an adequate reason for him to relinquish his seat.
On the other hand, his supporters have maintained that the Governor is innocent until proven guilty.
In their view, any attempts to impeach Obado hence may be prejudicial and unfair.
Obado was remanded at Industrial Area Prison in Nairobi after the High Court denied him bail on Thursday.
"The assembly has not received anything on the ouster of the governor. I believe it is premature to talk about it.
"We appeal to the people of Migori to remain calm as the law takes its course," Majority Leader Mallan Ogega stated .
Reports indicate that out of the 56 MCAs, only 11 are supporting the move, albeit covertly, which falls short of the two thirds (40) needed for an impeachment motion to sail through.
Obado is expected back in court on October 8, coincidentally, the county's senatorial by-election is slated to take place on the same day.
