Don Bosco Gichana, the flashy businessman and politician detained in Tanzania since 2013, arrived in Kenya on Tuesday.
Three weeks ago, Bosco pleaded guilty before an Arusha court to charges including money laundering and was sentenced to five years in prison, time he had already served.
He was further ordered to pay a Tsh300 million (Sh13.7 million) fine.
His family shared pictures of Bosco being processed at the Namanga border stop on his way to Nairobi.
Bosco famously gifted National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga a Hummer SUV in 2007.
Savouring his new-found freedom, Gichana took to Facebook to reveal what he planned to do now that he was back.
“Thank you counsel, family, friends and everyone who has been with me in this journey. I'm free and back to my motherland, Kenya. May God bless you.
“Let me grab some sweet nyama choma, I missed it!” he posted.
Gichana was first arrested on March 29, 2013 when he went to Tanzania to visit his lawyer Median Mwale.
Mwale had himself been in detention since August 2011 over money laundering.
