UN Boss Message After Tragic Accident at Fort Ternan

The United Nations Secretary General António Guterres joined leaders who sent their condolence messages to families of those bereaved by the tragic accident at Fort Ternan in Kericho County.

In a statement released by his spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the UN Secretary General stated that he was deeply saddened by the accident which claimed the lives of 55 people.

“The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the bereaved families, the survivors and the government and people of Kenya,” Dujarric stated.

Rescuers counted up to 48 bodies from the scene of the fatal crash while several other casualties who were critically injured were hospitalised.

The injured were taken to Fort Ternan dispensary and Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

Police in Kakamega arrested Cleophas Toto Shimanyula and Benard Ishindu Shitiabayi, who are the owners of the bus which was ferrying passengers from Nairobi.

Police also impounded vehicles belonging to Western Cross Roads Sacco which the ill-fated bus belonged to.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority Director General Francis Meja, the owners of the bus will face prosecution since the vehicle was not licensed to operate at night.

The 67-seater bus veered off the road while descending a steep slope then hit a guardrail, rolled over and plunged down about 20 metres, landing on a rocky farm.

Eyewitnesses stated that they heard a long hooting sound, then a screech that was followed by a bang and loud screams from passengers.
