Isiolo Man Abandons Wife, 3 Babies in Hospital

A middle-aged man fled a hospital abandoning his 30-year-old wife and three newborn babies.

The wife was abandoned by her family at a hospital in Isiolo County after giving birth to triplets and had not been visited by any of her kinsmen.

Elizabeth Kadogo, a resident of Burat Ward in Isiolo County, successfully delivered the babies on October 8 but not even her husband or family members could visit her since the delivery.

When her husband, Johniso Icharait, turned up at the hospital on Wednesday to see how his wife was fairing on, he was met with the shocking news that she had given birth to triplets.

Kadogo and Johniso originally are from the Turkana Community whose traditions hold that giving birth to more than one child at a go is abnormal and often associated with evil deeds.

With the triplets, it means the family will now have six children given they already have three others aged 18, 16 and 6 years. In her first delivery, Kadogo had twins, but one of the babies died shortly after birth.

"In our community people only hear of cases where a mother has given birth to twins, but not three babies at the same time. This came as a shock to my mother-in-law, who was elderly and couldn’t stand the news,” narrated Kadogo.

The Avi-matercare Hospital matron Emily Jebiwott confirmed the incident saying this was the first case of triplets being delivered at the facility. She said Kagogo underwent a surgery to have all the three babies safely delivered.

According to Kadogo, the father of her babies is jobless and depends on charcoal burning to cater for the family needs.
