Demolitions Set for Properties Around and Within JKIA

Demolitions are set for approximately 50 properties on JKIA before the launch of the direct flights to New York.

Reports indicate that property worth billions on airport land will be demolished before October 28.

Chairman of the multi-sectoral committee on unsafe structures Moses Nyakiongora, stated that a two-week eviction notice was issued on September 28, to developers who had property on and around the land.

The notice, that expired on October 12, was issued to 500 properties that were located on JKIA, Wilson Airport and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) staff quarters in Embakasi Village.

Nyakiongora explained to Standard that the removal of the buildings is part of the precautions taken for aviation safety in order not to risk the lives of human beings on the ground.

"Upon expiry of this notice, the illegally developed buildings, installations or erections will be demolished or removed from the flight path or encroached land without further references to them at their owners’ cost and risk as to any loss or damage incurred," read a part of the notice quoted.

Undeveloped plots as well will be reacquired by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).

On Monday, General Service Unit (GSU) officers who had been manning the properties locked up workers to illustrate the seriousness of the matter.

The chairman further appealed to the National Land Commission (NLC) to cancel the title deeds issued to powerful people for sections of the airport.

He affirmed that the cancellation of the title deeds was necessary in order to meet the strict requirements the country had to meet before being given the go-ahead for the direct flights to the US.
