Thika United Retires Jersey '22' After Ex-Captain Dennis Lewa's Death

Thika United retired the no. 22 jersey following the death of former club captain Dennis Lewa aka Yori.

Lewa was among 50 people killed in Fort Ternan, Kericho earlier this month when a bus veered off the road.

He was headed to Kakamega to complete a move to Kenyan Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz.

A fundraiser was held at Thika Stadium on Wednesday in support of Lewa's family.

Teammates, club officials, family and friends remembered him as a talented, devoted, happy and committed individual.

Lewa's death was first confirmed by his brother Evans Mwangala on October 11.

"Thika United FC on behalf of Mwangala's family, wishes to thank all those who turned up for Denis Lewa tribute an fundraiser yesterday at Thika Stadium, may you never lack in your kindness and may God bless you," the club wrote after the fundraiser.

The Kisumu-bound 'Homeboyz' bus Lewa traveled in rolled several times killing all but 11 passengers on board.

According to police, the driver lost control of the vehicle with skid marks observed on the road.

Following increased accidents, a major multi-agency crackdown on Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) by the Interior Ministry, Police, NTSA and Transport Ministry is to begin next week.
