Sonko Addresses Brutal Attack on Citizen Journalist Kimani by City Askaris

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday addressed the brutal attack meted on Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua after taking the video of county askaris arresting a rider from a moving motorcycle.

In a statement sent to the media, Sonko noted that his Government had noted with concern the story about an incident of the assault.

"The county government has a zero tolerance for corruption and the matter will be subjected to thorough investigation," the statement reads.

Sonko further promised that the said officers will be treated fairly but firmly, and, should they be found guilty, they will be prosecuted.

"We are also aware that several individuals masquerade as County officials, and it is a challenge that is being addressed," he noted.

"The claim will be treated with the seriousness it deserves," Sonko quipped.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, Kimani indicated that the officers accosted him while he was recording an incident where the officers were demanding a bribe from a boda boda operator who had flouted the motorbikes ban in Nairobi’s CBD.

"It’s unfortunate what happened and what has been happening, I was recording the incident using my phone as I awaited the cameraman.

"An officer roughed me up and took me to Fire Station offices where I received several slaps and had my head banged against the wall," he stated.

The journalist who covers traffic updates in the morning was later admitted to hospital nursing head and neck injuries sustained during the assault.
