KNEC Tightens Marking Rules Against Schools Accused of Cheating

Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) chairman Prof George Magoha on Friday stated that strict marking awaits candidates from schools that reportedly engaged in malpractices in the ongoing national examinations.

Speaking on Friday, Magoha divulged that 10 examiners were set aside and tasked with going through scripts from such exam centres with the aim of identifying possible collusion.

He further explained that the action is likely to lead to cancellation of examinations from students while ruling out an earlier decision to suspend examinations from the entire centres.

The council ruled out the blanket cancellation stating that it would affect even the innocent students.

We had indicated that people were planning to cheat and you can see this now. Teachers are working around the clock to have candidates have access to exam materials,” stated Prof Magoha.

He also promised stern action against teachers who aided in exam cheating accusing them of being products of the same due to their relentlessness even with the council’s stern rules.

Those teachers aiding candidates to cheat are products of the past cheating and that is why they seem determined to aid in cheating despite the tough rules,” he continued.

KNEC however opted not to name the individual schools since it would cause panic against the candidates supposed to sit for the exams

This comes shortly after students from Ambira High School featured in an online viral video admitting to having taken part in KCSE exams malpractice.

The students further hurled insults against Education CS Amina Mohamed and her Interior counterpart Fred Matiang’i while burning materials in the background.

Police are now looking for the culprits.
