Judge William Deverell Dies

Chief Justice David Maraga on Tuesday mourned former Court of Appeal Judge William Shirley Deverell who passed away.

The CJ described the late Justice as a “fine lawyer and an outstanding judge.”

He further stated that the judge was highly respected within the legal fraternity and that he mentored many lawyers who went on to become great players in the industry.

I have learnt with great sadness about the demise of Justice William Shirley Deverell, a former judge of the court of appeal.

"On behalf of the Judiciary, my family and my own behalf, I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends,” condoled the CJ.

The late Deverell had a very illustrious career in both private and his time in the Judiciary.

He joined Kaplan & Stratton Advocates in 1963 where he rose up the ranks to become a partner at the firm in a record two years.

He since held the position until 2004 when he was appointed as a member of the bench in the Court of Appeal.

Maraga further remarked that Deverell served in the position with “exemplary diligence and proficiency” until he retired in 2008.

For this, alongside with his immense contribution to our jurisprudence, we shall forever be grateful to him,” concluded the CJ.
