Sonko Grateful for Partnership With President Uhuru Kenyatta

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday revealed that five Nairobi projects would not have been as successful were it not for the involvement of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium, Sonko explained that cordial relationship between the national government and the county government has brought about development at the grassroots level contributing greatly to Nairobi's transformation agenda.

"On behalf of the Nairobi City County Government, I wish to express my gratitude for the support and collaboration that we continue to receive from the national government. Indeed, we have demonstrated that by working together, we will be able to make great strides as counties and national government," Sonko stated.

According to the City Governor, over the last one year, his administration and the national government had been able to achieve a lot.

"We were honoured that you (President Kenyatta) took the lead in one of our monthly clean-up days. That was a true demonstration of your leadership and goodwill towards the city of Nairobi. The cleanup, together with the beautification programme, is making Nairobi look very attractive," he stated.

The Governor also credited Uhuru for the support in fixing roads in Nairobi noting that although work was still in progress, there had been a transformation in many areas especially Eastlands.

Additionally, he recalled that they worked together to clean the Nairobi Rivers Ecosystem and to remove structures built in river ecosystems.

"It has revealed the need to expand out sewerage system to stop the discharge of waste into the rivers. I wish to caution all those who have structures on riparian land, please do not wait for us to come and destroy it, come to the county and give us a plan on how you will remove those structures at your own cost," Sonko added.

In the last few months, Sonko said, the collaboration between Nairobi and national government enabled them to produce 50,000 title deeds for various parts of the city.

He revealed that they were now working closely together on the affordable Housing Programme, which was part of President Kenyatta's Big 4 Agenda

"We have also recovered over 100 acres of public land that was either grabbed or illegally settled on," Sonko conveyed.

Other projects in the pipeline include the joint strategy for the Rapid Bus Transit system and commuter rail to create reliable public transport for the city.

Others are programmes to construct and refurbish markets as well as fire stations.
