According to a circular sent to newsrooms by the Ministry of Education, schools are set to reopen on January 3, 2019, for the first term.
This is contrary to prior information that had scheduled the schools to be opened on January 2, 2019.
According to Education CS Amina Mohammed, the new opening dates will allow parents and students time to travel to their destinations after the Christmas and New Year festivities.
“In order to allow time for learners and teachers who may have traveled to various places during the holiday season to return to their institutions, the opening day is rescheduled to 3rd January 2019,” the circular read.
Students joining Form One in their selected schools are expected to report between January 7 to 11.
This year’s education calendar will run for 38 weeks. The first term will begin on Jan 3 running through to April 5.
This comes even as the government is set to roll out a new education curriculum this January, despite prior attempts to have the implementation dates pushed.
According to CS Amina, the country will continue to practice the Pilot program, as teachers are trained before the formal Roll out in 2019.
Meanwhile, the CS announced that a methodical and carefully organized phased roll-out” of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) effective January 1, 2019, in pre-primary I and II as well as Grades 1, 2, and 3.
The rollout comes at a time when education stakeholders express their doubts on how prepared the country is for the new curriculum.
