Private Developer Forces Sonko to Demolish Wall Twice in South C Estate

A private developer has forced Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to demolish an illegal perimeter wall twice in South C estate.

The governor had last year visited the site which was in the middle of land grabbing saga and ordered that the wall be taken down.

According to the county officials, a former commissioner of lands had grabbed the land curtailing the construction of a road in the area.

"The grabber erected a perimeter wall blocking the phase two tarmacking of this important road. The County had completed the tarmacking of phase one.

"The perimeter wall was demolished and the road contractor was allowed to proceed with the construction of phase two. The road works continued. Today we were shocked to learn that the same grabber acquired approvals for reconstruction of the same perimeter wall from a senior County officer during the holiday," Sonko explained.

Upon acquiring the approvals illegally, the developer went ahead to construct the wall again.

On Saturday, however, City Hall officials led by acting County Secretary Pauline Waititu, Roads and Transport CEC Muhamed Dagane demolished the wall leading to the arrest of two people.

The arrested persons include, Joshua Irungu who is said to be the son of the private developer and Naftali Muchangi, a caretaker of the land which has been repossessed by the Nairobi City County Government. The two are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday to face charges.

Sonko has warned county officials involved in the South C land grabbing saga that they’ll face disciplinary action if they are found guilty of aiding the private developer to illegally acquire construction approval documents from the county government.

“We had already confirmed that the private developer had grabbed the land and also encroached on a road reserve during the first demolition exercise that I officiated over a few months ago. I’m now shocked that the same person has gone ahead and acquired approvals from City Hall to reconstruct the perimeter wall,” he stated.

Sonko has now warned that county officials those involved in the land grabbing saga will be suspended adding that his administration will not tolerate impunity.
