James Oduor Cobra Was Nominated for AIPS Sport Media Awards

New details have emerged that James Oduor alias Cobra, who was killed in the Dusit D2 attack, had been nominated for a global award days before his untimely death.

On January 12, 2019 AIPS Sports Media Awards published the Top Ten finalists from each continent in readiness for the ceremony to be held on January 21 in Lausanne.

Cobra was nominated twice in the blogs category for his pieces on his video blog Wadau TV which covered football stories from the grassroots level.

One recognition was for a feature titled; "We Must Relive History” Gor Mahia Fans, that showed the opening match leg of the CAF championships preliminary round between Gor Mahia and Equatorial Guinea's Vegetarians. 

The second piece that landed him another nomination was "Oti Father’s Favorite Phrase, a feature on a tournament to celebrate football legend, Oti. 

The Awards submissions included an inspiring level of journalistic content from across five continents, confirming that the quality of sports storytelling is present worldwide.

The first edition of the AIPS Awards received an outstanding total of 1273 submissions from 119 nations around the globe.

In submitting their work for consideration for the eight categories, colleagues from across the globe engaged in a dialogue of sporting excellence. 

Cobra, who worked at LG offices, was among the first people to send out distress calls on his Twitter handle immediately the attack began.

“Waaaah. What's happening at 14 Riverside fam? Any news from out there?” 

“What's happening at 14 Riverside man. We're trapped in our buildings. Gunshots and non-stop explosions” his tweets read.

Cobra succumbed to gunshot wounds. He was to celebrate his birthday the day after the attack.
