Kisumu Chief Questions Children Over Suspected Radicalisation

Kisumu Central chief Willis Onyoni and his Kaloleni assistant Moses Otieno stormed a mosque by the lakeside and found eight children undergoing Islamic teachings.

According to the Standard, the two were responding to the government's directive that chiefs and their assistants should be on the lookout for radicalisation of Kenyan children.

“We went to the mosque after getting a tip. We can’t take any chances. We are not judging them but doing our investigations,” stated chief Onyonyi.

The children aged between 11,12,13 and 14 were supposed to be in school at the time. The chiefs added that the government provided free primary education and the children had no excuse to miss school.

“They are not under arrest. We are still talking to them to find out why the children are not going to school,” Onyoni stated.

This comes at a time when Majengo area in Mombasa County has been linked to terror attacks.

According to a report done by the UN, Riyatha mosque located in Majengo area served as a recruitment ground and fundraising for Al-Shabaab.

Majengo area is known for other radical clerics like Aboud Rogo and Abubakar Shariff who were both shot dead.

The death of the two caused an uproar among the youth who attended their sermons at Musa mosque who took over Musa mosque and changed its name to Masjid Shuhadaa.

In the Dusit attack that happened on Tuesday, one of the suspected terrorists is said to have come from Nyeri Majengo area.
