Why Jubilee Will Not Contribute to Building Bridges Team

President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party opted not to present a memorandum to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) team.

The party's Secretary General, Raphael Tuju, stated that Jubilee will not submit a formal position document because "it does not want to seem to be dictating the taskforce".

“The issues being discussed by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) are much bigger than Jubilee. If we were to come up with a document and say ‘this is the position of the party’, some might see it as us railroading members to adopt our position," explained Tuju.

The party will instead allow its members to give their views to the team as individual citizens.

Jubilee’s position could also be construed by many as an attempt by the party to insulate President Uhuru from any backlash.

Whereas President Kenyatta had intimated that a referendum would be inevitable, Deputy President William Ruto's allies have opposed the proposal.

ODM Party, on the other hand, has already declared the recommendations it will submit to the 14-member task force.

The opposition party adopted a position calling for the formation of a Prime Minister’s position and the adoption of a hybrid system.

If adopted, they will then be presented to the BBI on the proposal to amend the Constitution.

Nine issues that the team is expected to provide solutions to are; ethnic antagonism, lack of a national ethos, inclusivity, devolution, divisive elections, safety, and security, corruption, shared prosperity, as well as responsibilities and rights of citizens.
