Sonko Explains Why He Carried Bundles of Cash to JKL

Governor Mike Sonko has come clean on why he was carrying bundles of cash on live TV during his Wednesday interview on Jeff Koinange Live.

Speaking through his Communications Director Jacob Elkana, Sonko told eDaily that he had carried the money because, after the interview, he was scheduled to visit Pumwani Hospital to help offset bills for patients.

The governor, as you all know, likes to make impromptu visits to public facilities at night. The money you saw stashed in his coat pocket was meant to settle medical bills for patients at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital. In his Wednesday night schedule, he was to visit Pumwani Hospital after leaving Citizen TV studios,”  Elkana explained.

He, however, refused to reveal the exact amount of money Sonko had carried to the interview.

“I cannot reveal the amount of money he had in his pocket that night,” he reported with finality after he was asked to confirm the amount.

He also made it clear that Sonko had broken no law by carrying the wads of cash, given that the money was not attained by any illegal means.

It is not a crime for any Kenyan to walk around with money in his pocket so long as the currency is legal, not defaced and was not suspiciously acquired,” Elkana noted.

This comes after Sonko was seen carrying what seemed to be a gun during the rescue operations at the Dusit D2 Riverside Drive Attack.

While Elkana countered that what Sonko was carrying in his pockets was a gun, claiming that it was a power bank, the governor came clean on the JKL interview confirming that it was an actual gun.

The City Hall boss explained that he was carrying the pistol in readiness to join the fight against the attackers in case he was called upon.
