How Police Plan to Dispose Unclaimed Vehicles From Their Yards

Owners of the vehicles lying around police stations in Nairobi, Machakos and Kiambu Counties have 30 days to claim their vehicles or else, they will be discarded.

According to a gazette notice published on Saturday, seven auctioneers stated their intentions to sell the unclaimed vehicles lying around Gatundu, Huruma, Kasarani, Muthaiga, and Machakos police stations.

Owners of the motor vehicles and motorbikes which are lying idle and unclaimed within Huruma Police Yard, to collect them within 30 days from the date of publication of this notice,” read an excerpt from the gazette notice.

This comes two months after Interior CS Fred Matiang’i announced that plans were underway to have the state dispose of the vehicles.

The move to have the vehicles auctioned is allowed by the law under section 63(5) of the National Police Act.

The police must, however, first present an inventory of the unclaimed assets in court, to ensure that a magistrate approves the auctioning.

If no owner establishes his claim to the property within twelve months from the date of the notice, the property may be sold in a manner directed by the magistrate,” reads a part of the act.

The proceeds of the auctions are then deposited into consolidated funds.

The unclaimed vehicles are mostly wrecked vehicles involved in road accidents and those that were nabbed for traffic offenses.

80 motorcycles are also said to be part of the vehicles listed for auction.
