Starehe Boys' Center has benefited from a Ksh20 million dormitory renovation project sponsored by Al Jallaf Family, a prominent business family based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
During the unveiling of the renovations, the Al Jallaf Family stated that the project was an important milestone in their philanthropic activities globally.
According to the family's representative, Fadi Moussa, Starehe Boys was chosen because of the school’s legacy in catering for bright students from needy families and its rich heritage in shaping leaders in diverse fields of the society.
The project, which commenced in October 2018, involved the refurbishing of the Njonjo House dormitory, named in honour of Kenya’s former Attorney General Charles Njonjo.
The money also went into the installation of safety features like an automatic and manual fire alarm, smoke detectors, fire escape doors, and plumbing works.
Additionally, it also included installation of People With Disability (PWD) washrooms for the physically challenged, fixing of cabinets, veranda canopies, aluminium windows and paint works.
The project was facilitated through the family's company, AJ Capital and Investment (AJCI), which specializes in interior design solutions for homes and offices including fabrics, shades, blinds, and furniture in Kenya.
Starehe Boys' Center Director Josphat Mwaura hailed the project stating that it would significantly improve the learning environment in the school.
Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju, who was the chief guest at the event commended the Al Jallaf Family for supporting the project, stating that it marked a transformative milestone in the school’s history. Tuju is an alumnus of the institution.
Starehe Boys' Center is a charitable institution that caters mostly for academically talented boys from needy families.
Established in 1959 by the late pioneer educationist Dr Geoffrey Griffin, it has produced some of the most prominent leaders and professionals in the country.
