Governor Mike Sonko's Nominee for CEC Job Declines Offer

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's nominee for the position of a County Executive Committee (CEC), on Tuesday, rejected the offer citing the governor's leadership style as wanting.

Reports indicated that the new appointee, who was to head a critical department at the county government, got cold feet and needed assurance over certain critical issues before taking up the job.

Among the issues raised were the governor’s abrasive leadership style, his impromptu visits, sensationalizing of issues, lack of integrity and lack of respect to professionalism.

Furthermore, the appointee wanted issues of nepotism, accountability, transparency in resource allocation and political commitment addressed.

In January, Governor Sonko made a reshuffle in his cabinet retaining only half of his initial cabinet members while bringing in new faces.

The reshuffle came after the resignation of Education executive Janet Ouko in early January, leaving the Governor with only five County Executive Committee Members (CECM).

Ouko alleged her reason for stepping down was because the governor was running the county in a chaotic manner.

In 2018, Sonko suspended two CECMs, former Devolution executive Veska Kangogo and former Health executive Hitan Majevdia.

The Livestock and Agriculture executive, Wachira Njunguna and ICT executive Emmah Muthoni also lost their jobs after running down their contracts.

Earlier in January, Sonko postponed the naming of a nominee for the deputy governor position as promised.
