Brother Plants Explosives in Sister's House Over Family Wealth

Noor Mohammed Jan found himself on the wrong side of the law on Monday, when the High Court ruled that he had a case to answer following his attempt to set up his sister, Zahara Jan Pote.

The accused is alleged to have planted explosive ammunition at his sister’s house near the Coast Provincial General Hospital in an attempt to have her branded as a radical so that he could take over the family estate.

"The accused wanted to frame his sister so she could be arrested and thrown out of the country as she is married to an American,” Francis Kipsang, a former deputy Directorate of Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO), informed the court.

Noor was then charged with being in possession of explosive ammunition, 507 unlicensed bullets, giving false information to the police and trying to falsely incriminate his sister.

The two siblings have been engaged in a bitter family feud, with their vast estate at the heart of the matter.

Since the death of their mother in 2011, the two have been in and out of court numerous times in a bid to get controlling rights to their family properties valued at Ksh100 million.

Noor had previously filed a case at the Kadhi’s court claiming that their mother had signed transfer documents of some of the highly contested properties.

Back in 2009, the title deeds of three of Zahara’s properties were altered to reflect her mother, Shuni Haji, as the owner, which prompted her to report her brother to the police, accusing him of forgery.

The presiding magistrate, Justice Annah Omollo, directed that the case will be heard on March 18, 2019.
